Partnership History & Key Initiatives
2015-2020: Foundation & Migration
The PGA TOUR began a transformative journey with AWS in 2015 to address fundamental operational challenges hindering their ability to innovate and scale. The organization faced the inability to quickly scale infrastructure, data scattered across disparate systems, and limited resources for innovation—challenges common across industries undergoing digital transformation. This period marked the foundation of a comprehensive cloud migration strategy. In 2020, the TOUR piloted "Every Shot Live", providing coverage of every shot from every player and demonstrating cloud-based production capabilities. Recognizing the strategic value of cloud infrastructure, the PGA TOUR decided to migrate remaining on-premises data centers to AWS. AWS is not just the infrastructure…it's a set of tools that can be leveraged to create the most effective data collection platform in sports.
2021-2022: Infrastructure Transformation & Media Innovation
In 2021–2022, the PGA TOUR formalized its AWS partnership and executed major infrastructure migrations. The TOUR opened its infrastructure-free Global Home facility in January 2021, operating all business functions completely within the AWS cloud. The TOUR migrated its Media Asset Management system, moving 9 PB of content—now grown to 30+ PB—including 100 years of video, audio, and imagery dating back to 1920. The rearchitected ShotLink system, using 150+ 4K cameras, radar, and computer vision, now captures 53 million data points per tournament. The TOUR also launched a rebuilt mobile app and engaged the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center.
2023-2024: Advanced Analytics & AI Integration
These years marked significant evolution in the AWS-PGA TOUR partnership, focused on real-time insights and intelligent content management. The TOUR completed the transformation of its ShotLink System, fundamentally changing how tournament data was captured and processed, and launched a redesigned website built entirely on AWS. A groundbreaking innovation introduced real-time "Win Probability" and "Make/Miss Cut" metrics, running 10,000+ simulations every 15 seconds to gauge a player's likelihood of success. The TOUR also used Amazon Transcribe to convert over 16 million entries of audio/video footage into searchable text, enabling rapid discovery of decades of content.
2025-today: AI-Powered Content & Personalization
The AWS-PGA TOUR partnership today focuses on continued innovation, with AI-driven automation and custom content generation for increased fan engagement. In 2025, the TOUR opened PGA TOUR Studios—infrastructure-free and capable of monitoring thousands of video and audio feeds from up to 144 cameras. The TOUR introduced AI-powered play-by-play commentary for TOURCAST, powered by Amazon Bedrock, and launched PGA TOUR Central, replacing the LINKS app with shot-by-shot data and analytics for members. An Agentic AI solution now produces 1,000+ pieces of content weekly. In 2026, the PGA TOUR launched the AWSAI-powered "Favorite Players Hub" available on the PGA TOUR app and website.
